Corporation

2003 marked a significant evolution in the sound of Testube. Jeff had spent over three years precisely crafting the alien anti-genre electronic sounds of this new release. At a time when formulaic "future pop" ruled the club charts, Corporation proved to be a bitter-sweet pill for fans to swallow. Those expecting the same dark electro leanings from the Bioplaza era found in its place a glitchy schizophrenic potpourri of experimental IDM.

However, like Bioplaza, this new Corporation album was, at heart, another concept album. Empathizing with fellow cubicle dwellers, Corporation promised to embody the duality of human beings spending their lives in an inhuman corporate office building. To mimic such a cold environment with electronic music would be easy. Jeff simply stored his keyboards in a closet, and wrote the entire album using the calculated clicks of a mouse. However, infusing that cold environment with the necessary fragile human elements would prove to be more of a challenge. Jeff decided that the album would require austere vocals to expose the frailty and discomfort of this sterilized humanity.

Christina Danos assisted with vocals, and their daughter Clover made her spoken word debut on the track "Promise Of God". Jeff recruited former Wrack Process compatriot Bryan Elsloo to create the club friendly "In Virus Tandem Mix" of the track "Atomic". Jeff wrote, produced, mixed and mastered the album, and also designed the artwork.

Reviews of Corporation:
  • "Byte by byte Testube delivers a vivid illusion of being stuck in a world of data nothingness, applying samples here and patches there until a virtual patchwork quilt of futuristic blips bear into your mind."
    Sep 2005
    Legends Magazine
  • "Parts are funky, euphoric distorted dialtones and bionic snares wrapped in various distorted messages and methods of communication."
    Jan 2005
    Black Harvest Zine
  • "The whirs, the bleeps, and videogame tempos smack of Kraftwerk converging with Haujobb, bridging the early experimental flairs of proto-industrial with contemporary electronica."
    Sep 2004
    MK Magazine
  • "Corporation is a cynical indictment of the office experience, an exploration of the unique horrors of working a nine-to-five corporate job. While the theme is in line with the sentiments of Snog's David Thrussel, the music itself is vastly different – a strange middle ground between IDM and gooey Casio cheese."
    Sep 2004
    Side-Line Magazine
  • "The production of this release borders on Q-sound brilliance. You've simply got to hear it on a surround sound system, it's unbelievable. You could draw parallels with early Kraftwerk, but with much better production. This album is diamond-cut with sharpness and has a perfect balance of experimental insanity with technological rhythm."
    Aug 2004
    Gothic Beauty
  • "With a couple of fits and starts, Testube mixes late '80s industrial disco, electro, and the glitches of modern digital signal processing."
    Jul 2004
    Exclaim! Magazine Canada
  • "The irony of this album is that it both critiques corporate control and celebrates cubicle creativity."
    Jul 2004
    Industrial Nation
  • "Allerdings würde sich „Corporation“ auch als Soundtrack für Filme à la Matrix oder entsprechende Video-Spiele gut machen. Fans von Underwold oder alten NIN-Sachen sollten Testube einmal ihr Gehör leihen."
    May 2004
    Der Medienkonverter
  • "I think I can best liken the sound on this album to a drugged out experimental Kraftwerk, fused with the ramblings of a deranged mind, with a handful of 'Yello' thrown into the mix. Definitely not an album to put on if you’re trying to concentrate on something else – your mind will be all over the place trying to keep up with the whacked out melodies on here."
    May 2004
    Hard-Wired Zine
  • "Testube has always been a special project for me and Jeff is a really talented musician who is always pushing the boundaries of electronic music and his own personal boundaries as well. Corporation is easily Jeff's best work yet."
    May 2004
    Wetworks Electrozine
  • "I'm sure that there are people out there that will enjoy his odd, experimental mix of electronic sounds and effects, but I'm not one of them."
    May 2004
    Wrapped In Wire
  • "Following the present IDM tendencies, Jeff frequently consciously breaks the linear constructions of traditional melodies, using beats, unexpected stalls and tone castings."
    Mar 2004
    Industrial.Onego.Ru
  • "Corporation is a must for the more adventurous listener, but not so much for someone who just wants their same old structured synth and beat loop compositions. I myself love this album as I have not found a bad track on it. This album has balls and if you have any you will check it out!"
    Mar 2004
    Re-Gen Magazine
  • "People say electronic music has no personality, no soul - with albums like this I really beg to differ."
    Mar 2004
    Vanity Project
  • "These guys never cease to amaze me! Always something new and always experimenting and pushing the limits and boundaries of electronic music."
    Oct 2003
    Chain DLK
  • "This disc is like old Gridlock meets new Gridlock with some Frontline Assembly thrown in. Its a very interesting industrial/idm hybrid. The song "Cog" on this album has some of my favorite lyrics at the moment."
    Oct 2003
    Terror Firma Sky
  • "CORPORATION is just damn cool; it is 100% thought provoking intelligence as well as purely artistic and highly creative."
